Potato ENTHUSIAST

In nz, "tough on crime" means cracking down on youths robbing corner food stores, by sending these children to military training camps, and hiding gang patches.

It doesn't mean being tough on domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault. It doesn't mean crackdown on wage theft by employers, violence by racists, male supremacist and gun violence, terrorism targeting minorities or men harming their former partners.

It's only targeting those that scare financially comfy conservative adults.

@Br3nda also, why doesn’t tax evasion have the same response and consequences as benefit fraud? It’s the same crime - robbing from the public purse.

@Br3nda In our biggest city if you don’t tie it down it’s stolen. Even if you tie it down it’s sometimes stolen. There are children roaming the streets in the early hours stealing cars, breaking into cars, stealing from people’s unlocked garages. I’ve lived here 46 years and never seen so many reported crimes on our Community pages ever before. Sometimes the theft happens in broad daylight and the thieves seem to have little fear of being caught out. Cont

@Br3nda We can’t leave our mail in our mail box either. Parcels? just make sure you’re home or a neighbour watches out for the Courier. What to do? I don’t know. Everyone is finding it financially challenging and everyone can’t afford comprehensive insurance. Petty crime is really hurting those who can often not afford to replace the stolen goods.

@CarolynStirling

A increase in posts to a community forum may just mean it's politically topical.

What are the actual statistics saying?

@Br3nda A lot of the offences are never even reported to the police. If no insurance people don’t bother.
Police are overworked and often it’s a long time if anyone turns up if they ever do. I can categorically confirm petty crime is way up. The only reason I haven’t had issues is my daughters two big dogs have access to my place and they guard both houses. It really is bad and there have been cases reported of strangers even going into houses while people are home. Cont

@Br3nda One night someone broke into every single car that was parked on the road here. GDaughter unfortunately left hers outside that night and the thieves created quite a bit of damage. They stole the stereo. They couldn’t steal the car ( which is a zippy little thing) because it has an immobiliser. This is quite a common occurrence now.

@Br3nda Also this crime wave has been going on for the last five years. I was hoping with more police supposedly recruited by the last Govt things would improve. Of course police can’t be everywhere at once. They really are overwhelmed. I think we need to look at why parents do not seem to know their children are out and about when they should be in bed asleep. When I was a kid the “Aunties” kept us all in line. It was a village effort We feared mum finding out about misbehaviour
